In the bottle: Initially the alcohol is quite sharp on the nose (especially if you really go for it); however, once you get past this you get this really nice cherry coke note, followed by a nice Polar cream soda, the combination of both is really quite nice. This really makes me want to try and find some cream soda as a mixer (blasphemy I know).

On the rocks: The first notes are cream soda and cherry coke (without the fizz), Tenryo then transitions into more typical flavors of toasted rice and light caramel, which are quite typical for rice based shochu. There is a bit of ethanol at the tail end before fading into a really nice finish, which brings back the fruit and cream and really reminds me of those creme lifesavers or some other similar hard candy. Overall Tenryo drinks really smooth, even with the fruity/creamy notes, it's not overly sweet letting you easily enjoy more than one glass.

水割り Diluted with water

4:1, 3:2 ratio: While this holds up reasonably well with some water, the intensity of the initial flavors fade quite quickly and while this remains nice to drink, I really prefer this on the rocks.

Enjoy on the rocks

Reflections on this shōchū

  • Tenryo brings out some of what I like the most about rice shochu, especially the cream soda and cherry coke notes, these blend so well with something to sip.

  • This was a nice suggestion by my wife, she purchased their umeshu which was also really nice and this bottle did not disappoint either.

  • I will try to pick up a few more bottles from Tenryo Shuzo to get a better understanding of what else they are offering.
