About: Kurokōji Kyoku Itteki
Koichi Kuraza (Chief brewer), this shochu is made using traditional manufacturing techniques, using domestic potatoes (Kogane Sengan) grown in fertile soil, combining good water and good koji. Black malted rice and atmospheric distillation create an exquisite harmony of sweet potato flavor and refined sweetness.
Enjoy straight or on the rocks
In the bottle: The initial aroma of this shōchū is really smooth and enjoyable with hints of potato and a general sweetness, however, must like the taste it does not linger very long.
On the rocks: A nice and smooth potato shōchū flavor dominates at first and then the sweetness that comes from the black koji comes in, however, it mellows really quickly.
Straight: This is a really mellow shōchū, enjoying this neat in the glass definitely keeps the flavors front and center, with a nice sweetness that pleasantly lingers.
水割り Diluted with water
4:1, 3:2, 2:3 ratio: Unfortunately, this shōchū does not hold up when diluted, especial at the higher ratios, while not bad, it does lose the majority of that potato shōchū taste.
Reflections on this shōchū
-
Perfect for a souvenir, nice wooden box/label and the paper wrapped bottle really gives a unique feel to this refined bottle of shōchū.
-
The aroma and taste mellows quite quickly with water or ice, and is not as intense as other potato shōchū, which may be good for those that do not like a strong flavors.
-
While the taste does not linger, you can feel the quality of the ingredients and effort that went into making it, also it is a very clean taste with no headache the next day even after drinking a bit more than normal.
-
Because this is a "duty free" limited edition offering, it is hard to find a lot of information on this release, even on the distillers website.
How I came across this bottle:
I stopped by the duty free in the Fukuoka airport before heading to Taiwan for a 3 week business trip to look for something to enjoy in the evenings. Normally, if I am going to buy something over 2000 JPY, I will do some research and most of the bottles in the duty free were above that price, so I threw caution to the wind and went with the most aesthetic choice. This was pretty expensive at 3000 JPY, but as a limited edition bottle of potato shōchū from Kumamoto, it was low risk, and came with a really high-end packaging.
